Penetrating the Female Demographic: 5 Insights To Help You Go Deep

A Girl’s Guide to Dominating the Other Demographic

As a 25-year-old FSU grad climbing the ranks at CX3D in St. Petersburg, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of marketing on diverse audiences. Today, I want to share insights that are particularly close to my heart – reaching and empowering women through effective marketing strategies.

1. Building Community and Trust Through Content

In my journey, I’ve learned the importance of creating a space where women feel seen and heard. It’s about more than just selling a product; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging. Companies like Chief, which bring women together, are prime examples of this. They understand that trust and community are not just buzzwords but the foundation of lasting customer relationships. As Adriana Kelly, a Milwaukee based entrepreneurial coach, says, “Trust is the most powerful component to any form of marketing or business transaction.”

2. Embracing Inclusivity in All Its Forms

Inclusivity in marketing isn’t just a checkbox; it’s a commitment to understanding and representing the full spectrum of female experiences. As a young woman of mixed Asian and Haitian descent, I resonate with the need for diverse representation. It’s about acknowledging that women come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and backgrounds. The era of one-dimensional female portrayals in marketing is over. Brands must strive to understand and reflect the entire female experience, even when it involves sensitive topics.

3. Collaborating with Women to Reach Women

This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how often it’s overlooked. The advertising world has historically been male-dominated, but change is happening. Take Ruth Bernstein of YARD NYC, for example. She recognized the gap and actively worked to bring more women into the creative process. The lesson here is clear: to genuinely connect with women, they need to be part of the conversation from the start. It’s about having diverse perspectives that can authentically speak to and for women.

4. Challenging Female Taboos

One area where marketing often falls short is in addressing topics traditionally seen as taboo for women. Periods, menopause, breastfeeding – these are all normal aspects of women’s lives, yet they’re often left out of the conversation. Companies like Elvie are leading the charge in breaking these barriers, focusing on the total wellbeing of women. As a marketer, I believe it’s our responsibility to challenge these stigmas and normalize these conversations. It’s not just about being bold; it’s about being real.

5. Meeting Women Where They Are

Women are starting businesses at an unprecedented rate and are a rapidly growing economic force. Despite setbacks like the global pandemic, women have shown incredible resilience and innovation. As marketers, we need to recognize and respect this entrepreneurial spirit. We should be asking ourselves how we can support and empower these women through our marketing efforts.

Although I have only begun my journey as a young professional in the marketing world, I see the immense power and responsibility we have in shaping how women are perceived and engaged. It’s not just about selling to women; it’s about understanding them, respecting them, and empowering them. The question we should all be asking ourselves is, “Is our marketing strategy empowering women?” If not, it’s time for a change. Let’s be part of the movement that drives equality and celebrates the diverse, dynamic nature of women everywhere
